Summary:
Ordination conferred upon Menahem Azariah Meir ben Elijah Castelnuovo on a bifolium document, signed by Livorno rabbis Yaʻaḳov Nunes Ṿais and Menasheh Padua (f. 1r), and a visiting emissary from Tiberias, Ḥayim Shelomoh Abulafia (writing in Padua, 21 Ḥeshvan 5573 [27 October 1812]); Nunes Ṿais alludes to his studying for twelve years in Livorno ("וקושטא קאי הקו"שט שנים עשר דהאי גברא דאיתיה קמן ..."; Castelnuovo would later become rabbi in Siena, and authored works Misgeret ha-shulḥan (on ritual law) and ʻEmeḳ ha-melekh (responsa)). Yaʻaḳov Nunes Ṿais portion written in 12 lines, in a calligraphic Sephardic semicursive script, and name and opening word in a Sephardic square script; Menasheh Padua portion written in five lines, in an Italian semicursive script; Ḥayim Shelomoh Abulafia letter written in 11 lines, in a North African cursive script (with a tuǧra signature at bottom).
