Summary:
Book of pizmonim organized by maqam (the Arabic musical mode), sung extra-liturgically (often according to the individual synagogue); the usage originated from Aleppo (and greater Syria) and was adapted by Sephardic communities during this time. The probable Egyptian origin of this manuscript is based upon some varieties of the square scripts (such as f. 7r) and the present text of a ketubah, issued on 13 Av 5627 [Wednesday, 14 August 1867] in בנהא (Banhā el-Assal, Egypt; f. 23r); the manuscript was written in multiple hands, likely over a period of time (one of the scribes, named Binyamin, signed on f. 77r). Many pizmonim written in oriental square scripts, with traced initials (for further coloration) on opening words; pizmon composers and accompanying text mostly written in North African cursive scripts; 20th century additions mostly in blue ink; a fragment of a pizmon pasted on f. 67r in an early 19th century Moroccan cursive script. Folios ruled in lead around script block.
