"The titles of the movements of Piccolo play are all taken from harpsichord pieces of Couperin. In each movement, the piccolo is the protagonist of the title and the strings provides the 'setting' or background"--Composer's note.
Composer's note in English.
Originally composed for piccolo and piano in 1989; arranged for piccolo and string orchestra in 2021; the piccolo part is not identical to the original piccolo part in the piccolo and piano version of this work.
This orchestral version of Piccolo play was commissioned by the National Flute Association in celebration of its 50th Anniversary.
Premiered by Jennifer Gunn (piccolo) and the Chicago Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Slatkin on 13th August 2022 at the National Flute Association 50th Annual Convention in Chicago.
