Biography/History:
Driesen (Drezdenko, Poland) had an exiguous Jewish community during the 18th century, whose members were engaged in imports and exports between the Kingdom of Prussia and the Kingdom of Poland.
Summary:
This is a ketubah addendum (issued after the formal ketubah; note on dorse) issued in front of witnesses, 4 Elul 5545 (Wednesday, August 10, 1785) in Drezdenko; referred to as Driesen (the name of the town in German; then in Brandenburg under the Kingdom of Prussia), the groom Mosheh, son of Tsevi Hirsch Segel, and bride Ḥaṿah, daughter of Josel Hildesheim. The stipulations of the addendum were that the bride was to allocate division of the ketubah funds to the couple's heirs in case of their death, and that the ketubah amount (previously) was to be revised from 100 Gulden (equal to 400 Reichsthalers) with an addition of 800 Reichsthaler and an aggregate value of 10,000 Reichsthaler (likely mostly real estate; ketubah additionally mentions dresses and gowns, with adornments and frills on them, and her hats to be excluded from the aggregate (“וכל בגדיה ומלבושיה וצמידים וחזיזים שעליהם וכל צעיפיה לא היו נחשבין”; lines 11-12). Signed by the groom below ketubah, with witnesses to the signature Shemuʼel ben Leib, slaughterer and kashrut inspector of the town, and Aharon ben Yehuda Leib, the town's Hebrew schoolteacher. Written in 28 lines, justified to the left margin (ketubah text); four lines of signatures below; written in a German-Ashkenazic 18th century cursive script; final three words written in a square script.
