- Summary:
- This account book was written and compiled by Charles Thomas Dalley and his uncle, possibly Matthew Dalley, in Markfield and Syston, Leicestershire, England between 1799 and 1857. The accounts detail drugs dispensed to the Dalleys’ patients. The volume is bound in original parchment boards. Each page is filled and there are several letters and notes laid in to the volume. There is an alphabetical index (p. i-xxiv) listing around 350 patients’ names. Within the volume, patients are identified by name and, often, location. The entries for each patient include the drug dispensed and the price. Many of the patients were from Markfield, but there were also patients from Barleston, Ibstock, Newtown, Begary Nook, Whitwick, Whitting Grange, and ‘The Forest.’ Most of the bound pages were written between 1799 and 1823 by the original owner, likely Matthew Dalley. There is a second hand in the account book, appearing in as early as the 1822 entries, that is likely Charles Thomas Dalley. Most of the items laid in are addressed to Charles Thomas Dalley, but some letters are addressed to his wife after his death and discuss outstanding bills and payments due. Examples of drugs prescribed include pulv emetic (p. 19), pulv stomach (p. 75), embro spirit (p. 107), pil cathart (p. 151), mistura diuretic (p. 198), and lotio emoll (p. 251).
