- Rabbi Isaac Benjamin Seixas (1781-1839, son of Benjamin Mendes Seixas). Eight and a half pages, original document, a discourse from his time as minister of the Spanish Portuguese Congregation in Richmond, Virginia, circa 1828. The document is the eulogy given at the funeral of Isaac Hillel Judah, a member of the congregation. He begins his speech with a quote in Hebrew and English from Job, Chapter 14 'Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.' The speech is based on the concept that Job, although was faced with a tremendous amount of hardship, never lost his faith in G-d. He accepts the bad that happens to him with the good; Rabbi Seixas encourages the mourners to learn from Job. Mr. Judah, the man being eulogized had contributed greatly to the establishment of the congregation and was an honest upright man. The Rabbi stresses that Job and our forefathers suffered difficult times and did not despair; the members of his congregation should do the same.
