Summary:
Amir (born in Prešov in 1928 as Otti Špíra) surveys the history of the Jewish community in the Slovakian city. Chs. 6-12 (pp. 99-222) relate the fate of the community (ca. 4,500 Jews) in the Holocaust, based on interviews with survivors and on Amir's own experiences. Discusses the anti-Jewish legislation in 1939-40; the burning of the main Orthodox synagogue in January 1941; and the "Jewish codex", severe anti-Jewish laws enacted in September 1941. Most of the Jewish residents were deported to Auschwitz in spring 1942, with the full cooperation of the Slovak government. In 1944 ca. 900 Jews lived in Prešov; some of them, like Amir, had escaped to Hungary in 1942 and returned after the German occupation of Hungary. Thanks to the efforts of the Working Group, they were not deported, but rather relocated to western Slovakia. Amir, with his family and others, survived there in hiding and returned to Prešov after the city was liberated in January 1945. Only ca. 800 Jews from Prešov survived the Holocaust.
