מנהיגות אגודת ישראל ישבה קודם למלחמת העולם השנייה באירופה. רוב חברי הנהגתה הרוחנית - רבנים, בהם חברי מועצת גדולי התורה, וראשי ישיבות - ישבו בפולין, בה גם התרכזו רוב חברי התנועה. עם תחילת המלחמה חברו כמה ממנהיגי התנועה שעזבו את אירופה למנהיגי סניפי התנועה בארץ-ישראל, בארצות-הברית ובבריטניה, ויצרו מוקדי כוח פוליטיים חדשים שהנהיגו את אגודת ישראל. ספר זה עניינו לבחון את התמודדות המנהיגות הפוליטית של אגודת ישראל עם השואה: הפעולות שעשו בניסיון למצוא דרכי הצלה ועזרה ליהודי אירופה הכבושה, והדרכים שסללו לחברי התנועה כדי להתמודד נפשית ואידאולוגית עם מוראות השואה.

מנהיגיה של אגודת ישראל לא ההינו להביע ייאוש ולאבד את התקווה להציל יהודים מגיא ההריגה. בכל שנות המלחמה הם דרשו להציב את נושא ההצלה בראש סולם העדיפויות של העם היהודי ופעלו בדרכים מגוונות ובלתי שגרתיות לעזרת יהודי אירופה ולהצלתם. עיקר מאמציהם הופנו להצלת האליטה הרוחנית של התנועה - רבנים, ראשי ישיבות ותלמידיהן. במקביל יצרו המנהיגים אפיקים לביטוי המצוקה הנפשית של חברי התנועה וחיפשו אחר דרכים לתמוך בהם, נוכח אבדן עולם הישיבות שבפולין והשאלות התיאולוגיות שהשואה הציבה בפניהם

Describes aid and rescue activities of the Agudath Israel movement, focusing on those in the U.S., which included economic aid to Jewish refugees in Lithuania, and later in Shanghai and the USSR, as well as in the U.S. and Eretz Israel. Food packages were sent through neutral countries to Jews in ghettos as well, and efforts were made throughout the war to help Jews escape from Nazi-occupied territory. Notes that some of these activities were illegal and even involved contact with Nazis. Until 1943 the movement focused on saving rabbis and yeshiva students, but then expanded its activities to all Jews, although there was some conflict among the leaders concerning who should be saved and whether Agudath Israel should work with other movements. Discusses, also, theological responses to the Holocaust of movement leaders, some of whom denigrated the Warsaw ghetto uprising, and many of whom glorified passive heroism. In the 1950s Agudath Israel opposed laws passed by the Knesset to commemorate the Holocaust, claiming that they were untraditional.
