Summary:
The book documents the exhibition of anthropology that the former National Museum organized on the occasion of the XI Congreso Internacional de Americanistas held in Mexico in october of 1895, and where the government of Porfirio Díaz presented Mexico as a modern nation that walked on the path of intellectual development and with the ability to organize events of such magnitude. The catalogue, which is re-edited for the first time, in a joint project of the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) and the Centro de Investigaciones and the Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social (CIESAS), contributed to the recovery of the photographic legacy associated with the study of indigenous peoples, conceptions around them, the state of anthropological and linguistic knowledge, and photography techniques and styles towards the end of the 19th century. In addition to the anthropological exhibition, others of botany, archaeology and other sciences were also presented, which were based on the Museo Nacional, a colonial building that today houses the Museo Nacional de las Culturas del Mundo. The Museo Nacional, entrusted the exhibition and the anthropology catalogue to two intellectuals: Alfonso Luis Herrera (1868 1942), considered the father of modern biology in Mexico and to Ricardo E. Cícero, at that time a medical student who would later become a dermatologist and pioneer in the detailed and systematic studies on conditions such as syphilis.
