Summary:

A biography of Rabbi Halberstam (1905-1994), who was a hasidic Rebbe in Klausenburg (Cluj, Romania) and Sanz (Nowy Sącz, Poland), based on eyewitness reports. Chs. 8-16 (pp. 136-247) relate his experiences in the Holocaust, beginning with his arrest in Klausenburg by Hungarian occupying forces in 1941. He and his family were sent to an internment camp and then returned to Klausenburg, which was occupied by the Germans in 1944. The Rebbe was deported to Auschwitz; from there he was sent for forced labor to Warsaw and then to the Mühldorf labor camp in Germany. Stresses his efforts, throughout this period, to observe religious practices and to encourage other Jewish prisoners to do the same. He was liberated in May 1945. His wife and eleven children perished in the Holocaust. The Rebbe emigrated to the U.S. in 1946, and to Israel in 1960.
