- Presents a history of the Holocaust based on rabbinic responsa and sermons, as well as other rabbinic writings and the Orthodox Jewish press. Stresses Jewish religious life and spiritual resistance in ghettos and Nazi camps. Chs. 1-18 (pp. 9-284), divided geographically, contain information on Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, eight cities in Poland and Lithuania, Yugoslavia, Greece, and Italy. Chs. 19-29 (pp. 285-381) deal with various topics, including concentration and extermination camps; communities that were liquidated; Judenräte, Jewish police, and kapos; Jewish ritual practices; Righteous Gentiles; life in hiding; and the guilt feelings of survivors.
