Summary:

A memorial book for the Jewish community of Nagyszöllös in Ruthenia (now Vynohradiv, Ukraine). Pt. 3 (pp. 177-213) relates the fate of the Jews in the Holocaust, from the Hungarian occupation in March 1939. Discusses the Hungarian anti-Jewish laws and the induction of Jewish males into the military labor batallions, both of which impoverished the community. The earliest deportations to Poland, of Jews who did not have Hungarian citizenship, took place in the summer of 1941; most of them were massacred. After the German occupation of Hungary in March 1944, a ghetto was established in Nagyszöllös, in which ca. 12,000 Jews were interned; however, they were soon deported to Auschwitz, where most of them were killed. Includes testimonies and letters describing life in the ghetto. Pp. 249-318 contain a list of Holocaust victims from Nagyszöllös and the surrounding area.
