- Summary:
- This is an illuminated ketubah (a Jewish marriage contract) on paper, written and signed in Kirmān, Iran, 1 Nisan 5614 (Thursday, 30 March 1854); identified as Kirmān in the province of Persia, situated on reservoirs and pools, which sustain it ("בעיר כרמאן במדינת פרס ומימי בורות ומעינות מספקא"; the reference to פרס may be to identify the city with the antique Jewish settlement, those of Maḥoze and Veh-Ardashir; cf. Bavli, Yoma 11a, Eruvin 57b); the groom was Reʼuven ben ʻEzra; the bride was Raḥel "khānoom" (a Persian title similar to gentlewoman) bat Yeshʻaya Efraim; three witness signatures. Written in twenty two lines (ketubah text), frame-ruled in lead, with an additional five lines of witness signatures. Written in an semicursive 19th century Persian Hebrew script; frame text in an Eastern square script. Item decorated and illuminated: vine patterns parallel and balanced (pink and green) frame the ketubah text, with roses at the upper framing; birds on branches at upper corners; encircled rosettes and herringbone color patterns and vines at lower portion. Item previously folded, now matted flat.
