Summary:

The compiler was one of eight children in an Orthodox Jewish family from Hamburg. The family emigrated to Rotterdam (Netherlands) in 1933. The book consists of letters written between 1938-46 to relatives abroad, and notes and memoirs written during the war or soon after, discussing the events and religious (halakhic) subjects, and describing life in the transit camp Westerbork and later in Bergen-Belsen where Emanuel's parents, three brothers and one sister perished.
