本书在博士论文基础上修订而成,作者以"传统知识人"为向度,将清末书院生徒置于三层相互交织的历史语境,进行综合考察:一是清末社会"大变局"的宏观环境;二是清末科举制度与学术发展趋向的中观环境;三是清末书院改制与停废的微观环境,注意从独立精神活动主体和社会主体的视角,利用课作,日记,笔记,书信,回忆录,自订年谱等诸多私人化记录的梳理,结合官书史料,在回答清末书院生徒"从何而来""缘何而聚"和"将去何处"的基础上,系统梳理清末书院生徒在入院前,肄业时,离院后三个阶段的心态行为,出处进退,展示清末民初传统知识人身处"仕学之间""新旧之间"的处境立场与精神风貌,从特定角度分析传统知识人逐渐消失和知识分子社群的出现这一中国近代社会主要特征的历史进程以及近代社会过渡转型的历史特征.
