- Summary:
- This is a decorated ketubah (a Jewish marriage contract) on paper, written and signed in Mashad, Iran, 22 Elul in the year 1300 A.H. (Monday, September 24, 1883); the groom was Nisan ben Yaʻaḳov; the bride was Zeruyah bat Avraham; witnesses Elisha ben Pinḥas (also the scribe) and Abdul Cohen. Three verses in upper framing; ketubah text in nine lines. Item decorated: outer and inner framing dark blue outlined with faux gilt and orange, in a carpet tile and filigree (probably created on a form or with paper quilling); inner frame design elements include rhombus patterns and jeweled rosettes in greens and blues (perhaps attempting to imitate appliqué on textiles); the motif is reminiscent of an Islamic or Persian manuscript carpet page. Upper framing slightly tilted; item previously folded into twelve parts (now pressed flat).
