- This is an illuminated ketubah (a Jewish marriage contract) on paper, written and signed in Yazd, Iran, 25 Elul 5658 (Monday, 12 September 1898; the text reads בשלישי בשבת, indicating that the ceremony took place after nightfall); identified as Yazd, situated on basins and pools, [from which it] is sustained ("במתא יזד דיתבא על מי בארת ומעינות מהם מסתפקא"); the groom was Eliʻezer ben Tsadiḳ; the bride was Giani bat Pinḥas; five witness signatures. Written in twenty three lines (three lines of introduction, twenty lines of ketubah text), with an additional three lines following the ketubah text with additional financial agreement. Written in an Oriental square script (ketubah text) and an Oriental cursive script (addition below ketuba, written in a different hand). Item illuminated: two peacocks face one another in a garden (watercolor, in reds and greens; partially filled-in ink and partially aquarelle and wash; elements of illumination unfinished); frame decorated with floral designs (ink and watercolor, in reds and greens); item previously creased (now pressed flat).
