Its use for solving geometrical problems, its practical applications for knowledge of the cosmos, the ingenuity of its design and the often exceptional beauty of its engraving have made it "the King's instrument." In the whole history of Islam and Christianity, it is the only scientific instrument of which we have a good number of copies manufactured from the first centuries of the Hegira until it fell into disuse in the tenth century. The astrolabe illustrates the evolving design and realization of astronomical instruments, and the transmission of Greek thought through Islam, Christianity, and other cultures. It fills gaps left in our knowledge by literary texts and manuscripts dealing with ancient instruments. It also provides us with data that allows us to know who exactly were the builders and to better understand their function and that of their instruments in society.
