- Summary:
- 2 letters from lower deck seaman, Joseph Harrison, surgeon's mate on the ROYAL SOVEREIGN, dated 26 February and 16 March 1796. Harrison (who had been pressed into naval service) wrote to his sweetheart, 'Miss Butler'. The letters talk of exchanging likenesses, but mostly of Harrison's hopes for promotion and making his fortune so he can marry his sweetheart when he returns from the West Indies (in what he estimates will be four years). Two letters from 'the lower deck'. The letters are photocopies and difficult to read but typed transcripts of both letters are included.
