HMS ABERGAVENNY. Medical and surgical journals. Includes details on victualling problems at Port au Prince, Haiti. In 1797 the ship could only get black bread, which was of no use for the Black troops. In 1797 an outbreak of dysentery was caused by the enemy poisoning the water supply. In 1798, a French baker put arsenic in the bread for the troops and crew, and caused a fatal outbreak of dysentery, for which he was tried and shot. For description purposes, ADM 101/80/2 has been split into three parts (2A, 2B and 2C), as follows: 2A: Medical journal of HMS ABERGAVENNY by George Brown, surgeon, from 26 May to 6 November 1797. During this time the guard ship was stationed at Port au Prince, West Indies: ADM 101/80/2A. 2B: Surgical journal of HMS ABERGAVENNY by George Brown, surgeon, covering 25 May 1797 to 16 June 1798 during which time the ship was employed in the West Indies: ADM 101/80/2B. 2C: Journal of HMS ABERGAVENNY, stationed in the West Indies, by George Brown, surgeon, covering 1 October 1797 to 13 June 1798: ADM 101/80/2C.
