Summary:

Import merchants' agent. Correspondence (1808) with British authorities in Poonamalee, India, relating to Cabot's capture on the brig CREOLE and his imprisonment by the British during the Napoleonic Wars, and correspondence (1820-44) with his family during commission voyages to New Orleans, La., Leghorn (Livorno, Italy), and Marseilles, France; together with accounts and depositions of Charles Follen, relating to his capture by Confederate troops while lease-farming the Childress plantation at Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and other papers. Also included is the journal of sailor Stephen Cabot, kept from 18 October 1814 - 30 April 1815. Cabot describes the wreck of the brig PRINCIPE REAL and the crew's rescue by a French vessel, and their transfer to another ship captured by the French crew, which they sailed back towards the United States and sank off the coast of North Carolina. Cabot describes life onboard ship, including mutinous sailors, the rescue of another American vessel, and his eventual return to Boston.
