- Papers of sailor John Melzard of Marblehead, Mass., including a letter to his parents and miscellaneous financial papers. The letter was written on 5 September 1798 on board the ship PORTLAND at Cork, Ireland, during America's quasi-war with France. Melzard assures his parents of his safety, describes his recent activities and financial difficulties, and writes about the proximity of the French forces. Financial papers include an account for prize money (1812), an order for the payment of prize money or goods captured by the privateer schooner ENTERPRISE during the War of 1812 (1813), and a receipt and bill for Marblehead, Mass. taxes (1814, 1822). Also included is an excerpt from a report by Captain Brown on details of Melzard's service.
