- Summary:
- Sketches of St. Domingo from January 1785 to December 1794, 1835-1836. Reminiscences of the Revolution in St. Domingo (now Haiti), specifically in Cape Francais, by Samuel G. Perkins of Brookline, Mass. who was in Cape Francais on business with the Boston merchant firm of Perkins, Burling & Co. His reminiscences were written to and at the request of Franklin Dexter in 1835-36 and are preceded by letters to him. Perkins describes conditions prior to the insurrection, in particular the relationship between enslaved people and their owners, the revolt and emancipation of the slaves including detailed descriptions of the destruction, his personal experiences, and the social conditions which resulted. The sketches also include a description of his voyage from Port au Prince to Boston in 1793-94 including capture by a privateer.
