- Violin made by Mathew Hardie (1755 - 1826) of Edinburgh c. 1775, referred to as the "Scottish Stradivari". Registered no. 1387. This according to certificate from Rudolph Wurlitzer Co., 7/29/32, which accompanies violin. Has been on board bark GEORGE HENRY (bu. 1841, Waldoboro, Maine; lost in Hudson Bay 1863). Violin back "is formed by one piece of handsome curly maple the figure in which extends upward from left to right across its breadth. The shoulder button is original. The sides are of maple with fine even figure. The table is of pine of choice selection and medium open grain. The scroll is original, also the neck. The varnish is original..." Bow in disrepair.
