Summary:
Diary of Martha Green of Bristol, N.H., who travelled to China in the clipper ship SURPRISE, commanded by Charles A. Ranlett, with her sister Mary and brother-in-law Joseph Wingate, the U.S. Consul to Swatow, 1863-1869. The diary describes the sea voyage, a stop in Hong Kong, and daily life in Swatow, including social activities with missionaries and other diplomats stationed there. It also describes several meetings at sea with the ship ST. PAUL under Capt. Ira Crowell of Cape Cod. Diary entries for 1852-1854, kept when she was 14 and 15 years old, describe her daily life and activities in Bristol, N.H.
