Summary:
Journal of Hugh Calhoun, kept from 23 June 1847 - 17 February 1848, on board the U.S.S. OHIO, which Calhoun labelled a "serio-comic journal of a cruize." The voyage began in New York and took Calhoun to Brazil, and then on to the Pacific, where the OHIO joined the Pacific Squadron. Entries note daily life on board ship, news of the crew, winds, longitude and latitude, and the weather. Calhoun also recorded numerous anecdotes from his previous voyages, as well as the OHIO's part in the siege and surrender of Veracruz, Mexico in the spring of 1847 during the Mexican War. The journal also contains original poetry and sketches by Calhoun.
