Letters from 1861-1865 were written from the ships on which he served as Captain's Clerk during the Civil War and describe the naval aspect of the war and his personal experiences as seen from the U.S.S. BAINBRIDGE, ALBATROSS, SUSQUEHANNA, BROOKLYN and ARIES. Also included are a few letters written to Parkman family members about the capture in January 1864 and subsequent imprisonment of Parkman during the war.
