- Logbook of numerous trading voyages of the schooner GOVERNOR CARVER, kept by captain Nathaniel Spooner. Entries describe weather and ocean conditions, latitude and longitude, encounters with other ships, and difficulties selling cargo. The GOVERNOR CARVER sailed between Mass. (Boston and Plymouth) and the Caribbean and between Mass. and ports in Spain, including Bilbao; ports in France; Gibraltar; and Lisbon, Portugal. The volume includes a description of Bakers Island Lighthouse in Salem harbour, Mass.; entries related to storms in the North Atlantic and damage sustained by the ship; references to the Anglo-Spanish War (1796-1808) and shots exchanged between ships; an account of Spooner's experience as a prisoner of the Spanish, who suspected him of being a British spy, April-May 1799; entries describing his medical treatment in Spain for a tumor in his throat; and miscellaneous poems and memoranda.
