Summary:
Diaries, logbook and letters kept by S. Lothrop Thorndike, 1848-53. Diaries were kept while Thorndike was a student at Harvard College, 1848-51, and while a seaman on board the merchant clipper ship COURSER, 1852, describing student life, studies, and life at sea. Also includes a single page from a diary kept in March, 1853. Logbook for the clipper ship COURSER includes wind conditions, latitude, and completion of ship duties while sailing from Boston to San Francisco, California and Hong Kong, China, and then Canton, China to New York, 8 January- 28 December 1852. Also includes letters written by Thorndike to his family describing San Francisco and China, 1 April- 20 August 1852; and receipts, Jul.-Aug. 1852.
