Summary:
Log of the clipper ship SURPRISE, captained by Philip Dumaresq, while on a trading voyage from New York to San Francisco, Hong Kong, London, and New York (1850-53). harbour logs kept at San Francisco and Hong Kong. Also, a trading voyage under Charles A. Ranlett from Shanghai to New York (1855-56), and again (January-March 1857). The volume was then used as a nautical scrapbook, and contains news clippings, charts, maps, broadsides, and engravings (dated to 1861) pasted in, obscuring some pages. Includes some materials concerning the drowning of Capt. Dumaresq.
