Summary:

Tooth by N.S. Finney. "Battle of Lake Champlain - M'Donough's [sic] Victory," a reverse image rendering after a print by Nathaniel Currier (New York, 1846). In all other known cases (numbering in the many dozens), Finney's copies were done in the actual size of the printed prototype. As this image is greatly reduced in size from the original, it is either unique (or nearly unique) among Finney's works or (more likely) was derived from a smaller, intermediate source. Verso: A bust portrait labeled "Commodore Thomas Macdonough, U.S.N." (1783-1825), copied from an engraving by John B. Forrest (1814-1870) after portrait by John Wesley Jarvis (circa 1781-1839), 1818; printed in the British edition of James Fenimore Cooper's "History of the Navy" (London: Richard Bentley, 1839). There is a similar, earlier engraving after Jarvis by Thomas Gimbrede (1781-1832), and analogous portraits of Macdonough by Gilbert Stuart and John Trumbull. One of a pair; other 1941.411. Tooth brought home by Capt. Butts aboard bark BRAMIN. Sailed from New Bedford, 1847.
