Summary:
The growing complexity of network devices and protocols, and the increasing need for programmability and diversity, led to the introduction of the P4 programming language in 2014. Since then, the P4 user community has grown exponentially, innovating networking through programmable data planes. P4 has become an increasingly popular choice for developing novel data-plane designs. Examples include P4 programs that realize new protocols (e.g., path-condition-aware adaptive routing), in-band network telemetry and improved monitoring, sophisticated load-balancing entirely in the data plane, new Internet architectures (e.g., NDN, SCION, network coding), and even application-acceleration (e.g., network-based Paxos, in-network caching).
