It is one of the composer's most famous works, one of the high achievements of the Russian classical ballet. The ballet was first performed in 1898 in Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. Marius Petipa, a great French ballet master who played an important role in the history of Russian ballet, was the choreographer. The libretto, based on a medieval novel, was written by L. Pashkova.
