Mantle Hood is a key figure in the history of Ethnomusicology and is credited for establishing it as a discipline- encouraging students to learn the music they were studying, now a key practice in ethnomusicology. He founded the UCLA Ethnomusicology Department and bought over the gamelan Venerable Dark Cloud from Java. He was an expert on Javanese gamelan and this is the collection from one of his fieldtrips. It includes correspondence and other documents relating to the fieldwork, the department at UCLA and the Venerable Dark Cloud.
