- Summary:
- The Amish do not generally permit photography because of their interpretation of the biblical commandment against the making of graven images. This film is an exclusive portrait of a rarely-filmed religious community that separates itself from the world. Photographed over four seasons, the film captures the day-to-day life of a people who have preserved their rural traditions. Rather than use a narrator to comment on this unusual lifestyle, the Amish speak for themselves. Stirring Amish hymns, composed in the 1500 s and handed down orally, complete the soundtrack. See also the Filmakers Library film Amish Riddle, giving more views of Amish life.
