Summary:
The statistics of childhood sexual abuse are staggering: one out of every four girls is sexually abused by the age of fourteen. But the complex and hidden factors that contribute to the abuse are rarely brought to light. The Amazing Normal Story is the true personal story of the filmmaker, Flavyn, who became sexually involved with a man old enough to be her father when she was twelve years old. Their relationship continued well into her teenage years. This documentary is a sensitive portrayal of the courageous journey she takes to rediscover and understand her past, her peculiar family relationships, and then to finally confront the man who molested her. Through unusual images and footage, childhood diaries, stories and interviews with parents, sisters, guardians, and friends, the film challenges preconceived notions about the way we think about and react to sexual abuse. The issues raised go far beyond the actual molestation to explore the larger issues of abandonment, family dynamics and love. In the end, both the filmmaker and the audience emerge with a message of hope and a deeper understanding of this vital subject.
