Summary:
This is an illuminated ketubah (a Jewish marriage contract) on parchment, written and signed in Finale Emilia, Italy, 13 Nisan 5592 (Friday, April 13, 1832); identified as Finale, on the river Panaro and basins ("פינאלי מתא דיתבא על נהר פאנארו ומי בארות"). The groom was Mosheh Ḥayim, son of Ḳalonimus Mazalṭov Carpi; the bride was Berakhah Susana, daughter of Refaʼel Ḥayim Finzi; witnesses Gedaliah ben Yaʻaḳov Yitsḥaḳ Uceda and Avraham Formiggini. Written in 20 long lines, in one column justified to center; entire manuscript framed rectangularly in brown ink (double lines, with interior painted in floral relief in bright golds, blue, and reds); painted flowers below text and signatures; two birds drink from a tri-footed basin (above introductory verse).
