- Summary:
- Memoirs of a leader of the Bund in the Warsaw ghetto (and its representative in the resistance), who survived the war and lived in anonymity in Poland to become a prominent figure only during the early 1980s. Deals with the establishment and liquidation of the ghetto, and the organization of the revolt in 1943. Emphasizes the unwillingness of the Jews in the ghetto to believe the true nature of Nazi intentions, despite the Bund's attempts to persuade them. Argues that the Polish resistance was not fully organized until March 1943, which explains its failure to provide the Jews with arms. Graphically describes the conditions at the Umschlagplatz during the first transports, and discusses the establishment of the Jewish Fighting Organization (ŻOB) which coordinated the ghetto revolt. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism).
