Summary:

The first pamphlet is: "History Set Right. Attack on New Orleans and its Defenses. By the Fleet Under Admiral Farragut, April 24, 1862. Correspondence between Admirals Farragut and Bailey." The reference to Bailey in the pamphlet's title is to Admiral Theodorus Bailey, not the creator of this scrapbook -- but perhaps the two are related. Pamphlet contains 14 pages and there are 3 pages of newspaper clippings on its publication and correction. Second pamphlet is: "Letter of the Secretary of the Navy." This 107 page pamphlet was written by Secretary of Navy Gideon Welles in response to a Senate resolution asking for official reports on recent engagements on the Mississippi River.

Notes:

Professionally prepared scrapbook entitled "History Set Right," published in 1869, with 2 pamphlets and 2 maps bound into the book. Also bound in are two colored lithographs of the "Manassas" and the "Louisiana" (original 19th century binding stubs are causing prints and some pages to break at the margins). Book was owned by Bailey, who signed it on a blank preliminary leaf. Bailey signed the cover of the pamphlet in pencil. Book has many blank pages between the two bound pamphlets. Maps are folded and bound in at the back of the book. First one is titled "Plan of Fort Jackson" (31.7 x 43.4 cm.). Second one is titled "General Sketch of Approaches to New Orleans" (38.1 x 31.3 cm.). Other newspaper clippings, some on Farragut's death, have been removed from the book and placed in a size 1 folder. Cover is gilt three quarter morocco and marbled board binding. Title on binding is "History Set Right." Title on front cover is "Capture of Forts Jackson and St. Philip. And the City of New Orleans by the Fleet Under Admiral Farragut. April 24th 1862. With a Correspondence Between Admirals Farragut & Bailey."
