"ספר זה עוסק בחיים לצד המוות ובדיאלוג שלנו עם שניהם ועם האנשים שסביבנו. זהו פרי מחקר ארוך, המבוסס על מפגשים עם נוטים למות, תיעוד דבריהם וקריאה בקטעים המתועדים בצד קריאה בהגותם של הוגים יהודים המשתייכים למסורת החשיבה הדיאלוגית. מסורת חשיבה זו נותנת קדימות לדו-שיח עם האחר (אנושי או רוחני) על פני הקיום האינדיבידואלי ורואה בדו-שיח עימו מקור עיקרי למשמעות קיומו של היחיד. הספר מפגיש בין דברי הגות המוגבהים מעל התיעוד העממי, היומיומי ובין קטעי תיעוד של בני אדם השקועים בחייהם ובמותם (או במות יקיריהם). אלו אף אלו , המוגבהים מן החיים והשקועים בהם , מורכבים, מלאי סתירות ואפופי סוד. אין כאן השוואה שיטתית בין סוגי השיח הללו, אלא כוונה להנכיח את השיח החי על סף המוות ומולו. שני מצבי ההיות , על סף המוות ואל מול המוות , מייצגים שתי עמדות שונות ומשלימות ביחס למוות, ולמעשה הם עלו מתוך המחקר, התנסחו ממפגש למפגש ולבסוף הפכו לנושאי שני השערים המרכזיים בספר. ב"על סף המוות" נבחנים מצבי תודעה שונים, כגון סליחה, תודה, כמיהה ואהבה, שהם מצבים מרכזיים בקיום האנושי לאורך החיים. בשער זה נבחנת עמידותם, ולעיתים אף התעצמותם, על סף המוות. לעומת זאת, ב"אל מול המוות" נבחנות עמדות מרכזיות כלפי המיתה והמוות, כגון היחס למרחב ולזמן בשלב סוף החיים. מתוך בחינת הופעתם אל מול הסוף הקרב ובא עולה ומתבהרת חשיבותם גם בשלבים מוקדמים יותר של החיים. האופן שבו מצטרפים כל אלו, יחד עם אופן הטיפול בהם, מנסחים את אותה עמידה מול המוות הבאה לביטוי בכותרת הספר , מוות דיאלוגי, ואולי אפשר בכלל לחשוב עליה כעל חיים דיאלוגיים נוכח תודעת המוות הטבועה בהם מראשיתם."--Back cover.
