- Summary:
- Raya Morg's new book is based on 101 lists about world cinema that were published between 2000-2020 in the "Culture and Literature" section of the "Haaretz" newspaper. It is intended for the cinema-loving audience as well as those who are crazy about talking. The lists include analyzes of the films of well-known American creators such as Clint Eastwood, David Lynch and Martin Scorsese, but they are mainly required for other cinema, unseen, less known or not known at all in the West, for example films from Serbia-Macedonia, Cambodia and Peru. These films deal with the burning issues of the current era: refugees, immigration, social/ethnic/racial/sexual oppression. While offering a controversial interpretation, they also constitute a renewed look at the history of the 20th century. They outline new ways to represent painful or silenced female issues, alongside dealing with LGBTQ sexual identity. They explore controversial or forgotten characters, as well as the oppressive effects of globalization. These are films that have a special cinematic language, a language chosen by filmmakers around the world to realize their artistic and value vision. Each of the films discussed in the book excels in the unique and surprising way in which it tells a story, uses the cinematic expression and involves the viewers. Although this may sometimes be a demanding experience, it is emotionally stimulating and offers multiple identifications. The author claims that these films demand from us As viewers to repeatedly take a stand towards the issues raised in them, to be ethically involved. This is therefore obligatory viewing, not comforting. back cover.
