Approximately 45 percent of black women are single and will never marry. In a culture where it is more common to see African American men dating outside of their race, what keeps black women from doing the same? Stepping Out? explores the complexities surrounding single, college-educated, African American women who consider looking for love outside of their race. The short film's director, Yaminah McKessey, reflects on the status of her own singlehood while probing the realities of interracial relationships as experienced by three black women who have decided to date, marry, and start families with white men. The film delves into the sometimes unexpected, sometimes funny, and sometimes painful reactions that African American women face from society, their friends, and even from their families when they decide to date white men.
