- Summary:
- On December 9, 1952, a group of seven artists opened an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM). Entitled Ruptura, the exhibition was conceived and organized by a pioneering group of artists and thinkers of the abstract and concrete movements in art in Brazil during the 1950s, most of them from foreign origin residing in São Paulo: Anatol Wladyslaw (1913 - 2004) and Leopoldo Haar (1910 - 1954) from Poland, Lothar Charoux (Austria 1912 - 1987), Féjer (Hungary 1923 - 1989), and Brazilians Geraldo de Barros (1923 - 1998), Luiz Sacilotto (1924 - 2003), and the catalyst and official spokesperson of the group, Waldemar Cordeiro (Italy 1925 - 1973). The group, born amidst preparations for the 400th anniversary celebrations of São Paulo and various national and international exhibitions, defended abstraction as a transformation project, capable of permeating people's daily lives, influencing the industry and organizing life on its most diverse scales: from fine arts to design, from architecture to the city. Few are the cultural institutions that can, 70 years later, revisit an exhibition they themselves have held. The catalogue on the Ruptura group comprise a critical review of a fundamental moment in art history and in the history of MAM itself.ʺ (HKB Translation) --Page 5.
