Summary:

On December 9, 1952, a group of seven artists opened an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM). Entitled Ruptura, the exhibition was conceived and organized by a pioneering group of artists and thinkers of the abstract and concrete movements in art in Brazil during the 1950s, most of them from foreign origin residing in São Paulo: Anatol Wladyslaw (1913 - 2004) and Leopoldo Haar (1910 - 1954) from Poland, Lothar Charoux (Austria 1912 - 1987), Féjer (Hungary 1923 - 1989), and Brazilians Geraldo de Barros (1923 - 1998), Luiz Sacilotto (1924 - 2003), and the catalyst and official spokesperson of the group, Waldemar Cordeiro (Italy 1925 - 1973). The group, born amidst preparations for the 400th anniversary celebrations of São Paulo and various national and international exhibitions, defended abstraction as a transformation project, capable of permeating people's daily lives, influencing the industry and organizing life on its most diverse scales: from fine arts to design, from architecture to the city. Few are the cultural institutions that can, 70 years later, revisit an exhibition they themselves have held.
