Summary:
CoBrA is considered one of the most influential international avant-garde movements of the twentieth century. The motifs and themes of its art are counterimages to the decisive experience of World War II. They are rooted in questioning and searching for forms of free art that celebrate spontaneous expression intended to introduce a cultural renewal. This publication offers insights into the creative cosmos of CoBrA before its founding. It shows how a network of artists and collectives formed even prior to 1948 whose diversity of motifs and artistic experiments express the rebellion and optimism of a young avant-garde at the dawn of a new era. -- Page 4 of cover.
