Summary:
Numerous petroleum pipelines and storage tanks are under service all around the world. Oil and gas pipelines as well as their storage tanks have played an essential role in the petroleum industry for hundreds of years. These horizontally buried or vertically erected hollow cylinders have delicate accessories and complicated operation practices, which are designed and maintained constantly. Because most petroleum-associated products are flammable and environmentally hazardous, the relatively high risk in causing fire and contamination further complicates their storage and transportation. By introducing only fundamental knowledge, this chapter serves as a good starting point for readers with a general interest of oil and gas storage and transportation techniques. With this purpose, the chapter contains a brief historical retrospect followed by detailed discussions on petroleum-associated pipelines, storage tanks, handling and operating practice, safety, and economic concerns. Although they are beyond the scope of this chapter, other aspects of the petroleum storage and transportation, such as negotiation with different interest parties, education and training of local officer and emergency personnel, employee wellness, and contamination remediation, need to be considered as well for pipeline companies and tank owners seeking a good reputation and financial status.
