Summary:
The standard methods and tools used in common industrial coatings and lining applications also apply in the maintenance of industrial coatings used within nuclear power plants. In some cases a combination of these application methods may be required based upon the skill of the applicator, substrate configuration, accessibility of the work area, and maintenance schedule. Pre-application activities such as surface preparation, protection of adjacent substrates, notifying plant operations, and material mixing shall be confirmed. The three common methods of application: trowel/squeegee, brush/roller, and spray are described along with the advantages and limitations of each depending on the work scope, coating specification, and power plant schedule. ASTM Standard Practices for qualifying coating applicator proficiency and ability to attain the required quality of the specified coatings to concrete and steel surfaces are identified.
