Summary:
Quality assurance of products is one of the must have attributes in any business transaction. Crude oil and other petroleum-based products are exchanged throughout the world and ensuring quality of supply, analysis, and quality control are of paramount importance to customers and suppliers. The importance of product analysis, significance of sampling and testing, precision limits, repeatability and reproducibility of various test methods, use of online QMIs (quality measuring instruments), system in place for effective quality control, laboratory referee method, conflict resolution in quality assurance, cost of poor quality, et cetera are dealt with in this chapter. Wherever needed, case studies pertaining to quality control and product testing have been inserted to enlighten readers. There are instances of near litigation between customers and suppliers arising from poor understanding of test procedures. Furthermore, refiners have developed their own proprietary correlations/inferential predictions from process conditions and past laboratory analysis and deployed them successfully in process control operations, and in turn quality consistency. These are also touched on so as to widen the learning base of the reader in the field of quality control, which in turn facilitates enhancement of the bottom line. Last but not the least, the challenges faced by oil industries today from the vagaries of crude quality and supply, as well as pressures for cleaner fuels and environment are also highlighted.
