- Summary:
- This chapter introduces the feedstocks and products of crude oil and natural gas refineries with a brief summary of biofuels. Classification and characteristics of various reservoir fluids are discussed along with the properties and uses of refinery products including natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, petroleum coke, some biofuels, and nonfuel products from petroleum refineries such as solvents, petrochemical feedstocks, lubricants, waxes, asphalts, and petroleum cokes. Different types of reservoir fluids are classified on the basis of their carbon number range and crude oils are classified with respect to their API gravity and sulfur contents. Compositional analysis of these types of feedstocks and the boiling range and carbon number range of various products obtained in refineries are provided as they relate to the applications of fuels and nonfuel products.
