- Summary:
- Punk in Cuba emerged in the early 1990s as a response to the collapse of the Soviet bloc. Considered by the government an influence of US imperialism that went against the revolutionary ideals of masculinity, cultural values and work ethic, national punk has been censored and relegated to extremely marginal channels of distribution and consumption. My dissertation, instead, sees in this culture a rich sociocultural microcosm that allows an innovative and non-institutional approach to the country's history of the last thirty years. Specifically, this dissertation argues that the rise of punk is symptomatic of the failure of the socialist project of the Cuban Revolution and that, as a culture of dissent, punk anticipates the widespread popular discontent that has been growing on the island in recent years. My analysis compares the underground cultures of Cuba with those of Europe and the US, which helps place domestic punk in a global context and exposes the reality of post-Soviet life on the island (defined by a precarious economy, global Americanized and a coloniality affected by inequalities of race, gender and class). Through the analysis of an original corpus of music and oral testimonies, complemented by collections of short stories and films about punk and other rock subgenres, this manuscript (re)constructs a critical history of punk and other underground manifestations in contemporary Cuba.
