Summary:
Despite efforts to establish gender equality among professionals in America, challenges remain, including insufficient representation of women in senior leadership positions. Women encounter many barriers throughout their careers, especially when trying to advance to the highest positions in both the U.S. Military and private sector. In the military, women comprise less than 20% of officers, and women in general officer or flag officer ranks, positions that are the professional equivalent of executive or C-suite level positions, comprise an even smaller portion. This qualitative research study examines the experience of women in the U.S. Military who have obtained leadership positions within the general officer and flag officer ranks, exploring the perspectives they hold, the challenges they faced and overcame, and the facilitators and frameworks they employed as they navigated the trajectories of selfless service and military leadership in this traditionally male-dominated institution.
